In the wake of this year’s presidential election, thousands of residents of Los Angeles County are gathering in downtown to exercise their First Amendment right to peacefully assemble. Crowds are marching through Wilshire Blvd. and stopping the traffic on the 101 South Freeway, chanting and yelling proclaiming President-elect Donald Trump is not their president.

Tonight, Nov. 17, will be the ninth straight day of protests in Los Angeles. More than 250 adults and more than 50 juveniles have been arrested, mostly for petty misdemeanors such as vandalism and road blocking. The demonstrations have predominantly remained nonviolent.

The phrase “not my president” is not alone in bringing these upset people together in protest. Many signs also challenge Trump’s bigotry against Muslims, immigrants, females, people of color and of the LGBTQ community.

“Love Trumps Hate” has also become a staple in this past week as the upset embrace and empower the characteristics labeling them as the minorities that Trump has looked down on during his Presidential and primary campaign.
