A Grammys to Remember

The 59th annual Grammy ceremony went off with a political bang when singer/songwriter Joy Villa debuted a Donald Trump-inspired dress on the red carpet. The dress, designed by Filipino immigrant Andre Soriano, was made to portray President Trump’s campaign. The front of the blue dress was bedazzled with the “Make America Great Again” slogan. Trump’s name, on the back hem of the dress, was stylized with gemstones. Villa’s choice to make such a bold political statement with her dress during such a politically divisive time earned her a lot of attention. In the days following her fashion statement, Villa’s music sales rose, while photos of her on the night went viral. In contrast with Villa’s political outfit, rapper CeeLo Green showed up painted head to toe in gold paint and dressed in shiny golden apparel.

The ceremony, hosted by British comedian James Corden, showcased numerous notable performances. Ed Sheeran performed his 2017 single, “Shape of You,” while simultaneously playing both the keyboard and guitar. Lady Gaga performed with Metallica. Beyoncé’s production of “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles” from her nominated album “Lemonade” earned her a loud standing ovation.

Many artists took advantage of the ceremony to pay tribute to deceased performers including George Michael and Prince. Adele performed in memorial of George Michael and Bruno Mars honored Prince with his set. Little Big Town, Demi Lovato, Andra Day and Tori Kelly recognized the Bee Gees with their mashup of several Bee Gees hits. John Legend and Cynthia Erivo also made a noteworthy performance in memoriam of all the artists who passed away in 2016.

Several artists also used their performances to protest President Trump. A Tribe Called Quest, along with rapper Busta Rhymes took to the stage Sunday night to address Trump’s plans for building a wall.

During her acceptance speech for Album of the Year, Adele expressed her admiration for Beyoncé, whose “Lemonade” album lost to Adele’s “25.” As a result of her album’s “undeserving” win, she broke her Grammy in two and offered one half to Beyoncé.
