A group of Pali students hosted a flea market at Regal Cleaners in the Palisades Village on Sunday, Nov. 10.
This event was led by senior Ethan Mordujovich, who has always been inspired by thrifting and has been doing it for a while. He recently quit his job to pursue his passion for vintage clothing.
“I’m super into vintage clothing,” he said. “It gets me so excited every time I see a shirt that’s from the ’90s or earlier.”
Mordujovich explained that he became significantly more dedicated to thrifting after he hosted a garage sale with some friends a few months ago.
“I was pretty happy with [the outcome],” he said. “Then I realized that this is something that I can do to make money.”
In order to begin selling vintage clothing more seriously, Mordujovich said he had to improve his methods of obtaining them.
“[I started going to] $6-a-pound sales at these rag houses in deep Los Angeles, and I’d get there at 4 a.m.,” Mordujovich explained. “It’s super sketchy, but when you dig around you find so much good stuff”.
Mordujovich originally rented booths at various flea markets around Los Angeles, but over time, he said that he began to broaden his horizons as an independent seller.
“In order for me to take [selling] to the next level, I had to start my own flea market,” he explained.
Mordujovich dedicated time to ensure the success of his flea market.
“I went to Regal Cleaners and I asked if [we] could use their space on Sunday because [that’s when] they’re closed, and they agreed,” Mordujovich said. “I then bought an insurance policy and got a couple friends together.”
Junior Ella White helps Mordujovich plan these events.
White explained that his flea market attracted an older demographic than the sellers anticipated, but that their products still garnered excitement.
“Most of the customers were adults,” White said. “A lot of people told us that we should definitely continue it because Pali has never done anything like this before. I feel like it was a pretty original concept that we would like to continue.”
She found the experience to be not only enjoyable, but also deeply fulfilling.
“It’s definitely [a lot of] work, but I think it was really rewarding,” White explained. “I’m doing it with my friends, so it was nice to hang out with them and make a profit at the same time.”
Similarly, Mordujovich expressed contentment with the profit he earned. He explained that he aspires to make his flea market an event that takes place every Sunday.
“It’s a fun event and I want it to keep growing,” he said. “I think this is going to be a staple in the Palisades for a while.”
